Recently my friends and family have had issues with anonymous
trolls in
their livejournal comments. It is a fairly well known fact that trolls
are cowardly little sociopaths who spend most of their pathetic and
meaningless lives hiding in the shadows of anonymity. Most of them are
terrified of the prospect of being discovered. A good way to begin the
hunt for such a person is to know their IP address. They certainly
don't want to publicize this piece of data to the people they are
harassing. As a public service I offer the livejournal logging
IP addresses HOWTO.
- Click on "Manage". I know a whole menu appears under it when you
hover your mouse over it, but you need to click the word
"Manage".
- Click on "Comment Settings".
- Grab that drop down box and select "Everyone".
- Save your changes.
- Optional: In this menu you can also choose to screen
comments. This means that you get to read comments before they appear
in your LJ and decide if they are OK. This is likely to annoy people a
bit because it slows down communication when people have to wait on
you to OK things.
- Optional: You can also change your journal such that ONLY your
friends can comment, or no one can comment. This is a bit heavy
handed, but if you do it for a week or two most trolls will become
bored and leave.
Of course if you use one or both of the optional steps you will need
to save your changes again. Happy troll hunting everyone!
